portraits of 12 emerging Bay Area, CA artists in their stuidios/places of thought.

The idea behind this book is to document a handful of the many talented artists who live and work in Oakland and the Bay Area.  With the increasing cost of space here we are often confronted with the dilemma of how to afford a studio practice.  Although this pattern affects a broad range of people, I’m particularly interested in what it means for an emerging artist to keep a studio practice and the different ways in which they deal with this issue.

Over the past year or so I’ve been visiting with artists in their studios to get to know them and their work and to take their portraits using 35 mm film.  This is the first issue of what I intend to be an annual publication.  I hope you enjoy exploring these creative people and spaces with me and remember to support our artists whenever and however you can.
