A proof is a one-off sample that a printer will make to get a rough idea of how the ink is going to work on the paper for a edition of multiples. Its usually one of the first prints off of the press while the ink is still wet so that the printer can make any necessary adjustments to color or registration. These experiments often have more character than the editions they are used for.
